The rookie test has become a permanent fixture in Formula E. Next Monday (July 14, 2025), it will take place once again following the Berlin E-Prix at the Tempelhof airport. The full driver line-up has been confirmed, and once again there are some big names on the list. We took a look back and put together a photo gallery featuring all the drivers who once took part in a rookie test and later secured a cockpit in Formula E.
Maximilian Günther
Maximilian Günther took part in the first Formula E rookie test (2018) for Dragon Racing after supporting the team as a test and development driver in the same season. Following a convincing rookie test, he was allowed to compete in his first season with the team before moving to BMW i Andretti Motorsport a year later.
With the BMW team, he scored his first victory in 2019 as the youngest race winner in Formula E. Günther later drove full-time for Nissan e.dams and Maserati MSG Racing for one season each. In the current season, the multiple race winner is competing for DS Penske.
Nyck de Vries
Nyck de Vries proved his talent in 2019, shortly after winning the Formula 2 title, during the rookie test with Envision Virgin Racing. He was then signed by Mercedes-EQ and drove for the works team until 2022. In only his second season, de Vries won the Formula E title with Mercedes. After a brief stint in Formula 1, the Dutchman returned to Formula E with Mahindra Racing in 2023.
Nico Müller
Nico Müller was the fastest rookie in the 2019 rookie test for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. He had already been active for the team as a test, development and reserve driver since 2017. He was already familiar with the ABT team through his many years in DTM.
In the 2019/20 season, he finally drove his rookie season for Geox Dragon. Two years later, he moved to the ABT Cupra team, for which he also drove for two seasons. Today, the Swiss racing driver is behind the wheel at Andretti and has already stood on the podium.
Jake Hughes
Jake Hughes drove a Formula E car for the first time in 2019 during the rookie test for Nio and represented the Mercedes EQ team in the same test a year later. The British driver is an up-and-coming talent who already impressed in the 2018 Asian Formula 3 Championship, which he finished in second place overall.
He was then further promoted by Mercedes. He made his Formula E debut in 2022 as a regular driver for Neom McLaren. He moved to Maserati MSG Racing for the current season.
Norman Nato
Norman Nato took part in the rookie test with ROKiT Venturi Racing in 2019 and 2020. He had previously supported the team as a reserve driver. In 2020/21, the Frenchman became a full-time driver for Venturi and won the last race of his rookie season in Berlin with the team. He then drove for various teams, including Nissan, for whom he is also competing in the current 2021 season.
Nick Cassidy
Nick Cassidy first sat in the cockpit for Envision Virgin Racing in the 2020 rookie test. The team had spotted him as a promising talent in Japan (Super GT, Super Formula). Cassidy was given a seat at Envision for the season following his test and quickly developed into a top driver there.
Cassidy finished runner-up in the world championship in 2023 and moved to Jaguar TCS Racing for the following season. He finished his first season with Jaguar with bronze in the Formula E World Championship. The New Zealander is currently one of the strongest drivers in the series with several pole positions and podium finishes.
Taylor Barnard
Taylor Barnard was the fastest rookie for McLaren in the 2023 pre-season test. In the 2023/24 season, he served as a reserve driver for Neom McLaren, stepping in at short notice for Sam Bird in Monaco and impressing with minimal preparation.
Ahead of this Formula E season, the Brit finally signed as a full-time driver for McLaren and is currently delivering a record-breaking rookie campaign. Barnard has made rapid progress with McLaren. He is currently fourth in the overall standings with two pole positions and several podium finishes.
David Beckmann
David Beckmann completed a successful rookie test with TAG Heuer Porsche in 2023. He previously worked as a test and reserve driver for Avalanche Andretti and competed in two races with the team. He also made a strong impression as a substitute driver for Porsche in the race car. Beckmann is competing in his first full Formula E season for the newly formed Cupra Kiro team.
Zane Maloney
Zane Maloney took part in the rookie test for Avalanche Andretti as their development driver in 2023 and 2024. The driver from Barbados had previously impressed in the junior series with consistent performances. Maloney also gained experience as a reserve driver in Formula 1 for various teams until 2024. For season 11, he became the first Barbadian driver to secure a seat in Formula E - with Lola Yamaha ABT.
