Porsche Formula E team principal Florian Modlinger has revealed four circuits he would love to see on the Gen4 calendar. Speaking to e-Formula.news, he explains why Hockenheim and the Norisring could bring out the best in the new cars - and names two more European venues on his personal wish list.
With Austin, Brands Hatch and Zandvoort, Formula E has added three new permanent circuits to its calendar for the first Gen4 season. In Mexico City, the championship will also use the full Grand Prix circuit for the first time, albeit with an additional chicane. However, Florian Modlinger, Porsche's overall Formula E project manager and team principal of its factory team, has further ideas about where the new Gen4 cars could make the most of their capabilities.
"One circuit that I think offers extremely good racing, because you can take different lines and the corner combinations work really well in terms of inside and outside lines, would be the Hockenheimring," Modlinger tells e-Formula.news. "Racing at Hockenheim with the Gen4 car - I think that would be a little dream."
The Hockenheimring not only has a long motorsport history but is also located just around 100 kilometres from Porsche's development centre in Weissach, making it a genuine home race for the manufacturer. Porsche also operates its own Experience Center at the circuit. By contrast, the Berlin E-Prix, traditionally regarded as Porsche's home race, takes place more than 600 kilometres from the company's Weissach site.
Norisring, Hungaroring & Adria Raceway: Modlinger's other dream circuits
"The Norisring would be a circuit where the Gen4 car could really play to all its strengths," he says, bringing a second German venue into the discussion. However, his ideas are not limited to Germany. Modlinger also mentions other European circuits, including venues that have previously hosted DTM races.
"There's also the Adria Raceway, which perhaps isn't quite as well known. Then there are circuits like the Hungaroring in Budapest. I find it very exciting, I always feel comfortable there. It's a fantastic circuit that offers great racing."
While a Formula E race at the Hungaroring would at least be conceivable in principle, the situation is more difficult at the Adria Raceway. The Italian circuit has been closed since its operating company went bankrupt in 2022. It previously hosted DTM race weekends in 2003, 2004 and 2010.
Whether Modlinger's dream will ever come true remains uncertain. While the Norisring has previously been discussed as a potential Formula E venue, no comparable plans for the Hockenheimring have been made public so far.
