Formula E: Maximilian Günther joins Envision for Gen4 on multi-year deal

Maximilian Günther will race for Envision Racing in Formula E next season. The 29-year-old German has signed a multi-year deal with the Jaguar customer team and will become part of its fresh start for the Gen4 era. Günther says Envision's technical package with Jaguar played a key role in his decision. The team has yet to confirm who will race alongside him.

The move had been on the cards for several weeks. At the end of July, reports emerged that Günther had agreed a deal with Envision Racing, before the German subsequently confirmed his departure from DS Penske in August. The Silverstone-based squad has now officially announced his signing for Season 13 and beyond.

Günther therefore begins another chapter in his Formula E career after spending the past two seasons with DS Penske. He previously raced for Dragon Racing, BMW i Andretti Motorsport, Nissan e.dams and Maserati MSG Racing. To date, he has claimed seven Formula E victories, 12 podium finishes and four pole positions.

Envision, meanwhile, is heading into the Gen4 era with an entirely new race line-up. Neither Sebastien Buemi nor Joel Eriksson will continue as race drivers in Season 13, although Buemi will remain with the team in an advisory and development role.

As e-Formula.news previously reported, current Envision simulator driver Zak O'Sullivan is expected to become Günther's team-mate for the new era. The British driver has yet to be officially confirmed, however.

Günther highlights Jaguar package behind Envision move

For Günther, the overall package offered by Envision appears to have been a major factor behind his decision. "I am very happy to be joining Paysafe Envision Formula E for the Gen4 era and I am really looking forward to our future together," said Günther.

The German highlighted Envision's successful history in Formula E and the quality throughout the organisation. His aim is now to combine the respective strengths of driver and team and return to fighting at the front. Günther also pointed to the environment, ambition and mentality within the team, as well as what he described as the strong technical package Envision will continue to receive from Jaguar.

Envision will remain a Jaguar customer throughout the Gen4 era after the two parties extended their partnership earlier this summer. Their collaboration dates back to the start of Gen3, with Envision winning the Teams' World Championship in their first season together in 2023. The team has since scored five Formula E victories with Jaguar technology.

Envision Managing Director Sylvain Filippi also highlighted Günther's outright speed. The German has repeatedly shown that he can deliver in qualifying and fight for podiums and victories, a quality Filippi believes will be particularly important as Formula E enters the new Gen4 era.

"We are incredibly excited to start working with him and to get going at the pre-season test in November," said Filippi. Formula E's official Gen4 pre-season test will take place at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama from November 16 to 20. The first season with the new Gen4 cars will then begin with a double-header in Jeddah on December 18 and 19.
