Official: Zak O'Sullivan promoted to full-time Envision Formula E seat for Gen4 era

Envision Racing has completed its driver line-up for the first season of Formula E's Gen4 era, promoting Zak O'Sullivan from development driver to a full-time race seat. The 21-year-old Briton has already completed several rookie outings with the team and topped the timesheets in Miami. The former Formula 2 race winner will now contest his first full Formula E season in Season 13.

Zak O'Sullivan will become a full-time Envision Racing driver for the upcoming Formula E season. The team is completely reshuffling its line-up for the start of the Gen4 era following the departures of Sebastien Buemi and Joel Eriksson. O'Sullivan already spent the previous season with Envision as a development driver, working in the simulator and taking part in several rookie sessions.

The 21-year-old made his first Formula E appearance with the team in the Rookie Free Practice session ahead of the Season 11 Jeddah E-Prix. Further outings in the Gen3 Evo followed during Season 12 in Berlin, Miami and Madrid, with O'Sullivan setting the fastest time in the rookie session in Miami.

He will now step up to a full-time race seat for the start of the Gen4 era, partnering Maximilian Günther. According to Envision, his contract covers Season 13 and beyond. The team will continue to use Jaguar powertrains during the Gen4 era.

"We are very happy to announce Zak as a full-time driver for Season 13 and beyond," said Envision Managing Director and CTO Sylvain Filippi. "We've spent a lot of time with him during Season 12, and he has established himself in the team very well."

O'Sullivan earns promotion after rookie outings

O'Sullivan's promotion follows a season in which Envision was able to assess him both in the simulator and on track. Filippi said the team had been impressed by his performances during the rookie sessions as well as his work away from the circuit.

Before joining Envision, O'Sullivan progressed through the junior single-seater categories. He won the GB3 Championship in 2021, finished runner-up in Formula 3 in 2023 with four victories and then moved up to Formula 2, where he won in Monaco and Spa-Francorchamps in 2024. He has also raced in Japanese Super Formula.

"I am very excited to be joining the team full-time for the upcoming season," O'Sullivan said. "I've spent the last year embedding myself into the team and can't wait to get the season started in the new Gen4 car."

Formula E has long been a target for O'Sullivan

The move gives O'Sullivan his first full-time Formula E seat after a year of preparation with Envision. "Formula E is a championship I've had my sights set on for a long time, so to be joining the grid for Season 13 at such an exciting time for the sport is a great feeling," he said.

For Envision, the decision means promoting a driver who already knows the team's processes and has experience in both its simulator and Formula E machinery. At the same time, the switch to the new Gen4 cars will give the entire grid a new technical baseline for Season 13.

Formula E's official pre-season test will take place at Circuito de Jarama Madrid from November 16 to 20.
