Will there soon be a second German manufacturer in Formula E again? According to a recent report by The Race, it is "likely" that Opel will represent the Stellantis Group in the electric world championship in the Gen4 era (2026-2030). An entry by Citroen is also a possibility.

The future of the Stellantis brands in Formula E has been a much-discussed topic for months. Maserati is actually already confirmed as a manufacturer for the Gen4 era, but still seems to be in doubt. Instead, the Dutch group could field its German Opel brand. Internal discussions have already taken place.

"So far, we are discussing with many brands, so I cannot disclose our internal discussion," says Stellantis' Vice President Motorsport Jean-Marc Finot. Nevertheless, he suggests how important electric racing is for the Opel brand from Rüsselsheim.

"We are in an E-Rally with the Opel Corsa," explains Finot and say the programme is already a very good fit for the brand. "We are very proud to have brought a new way of racing with an electric rally car. It's good because it makes Opel as a brand very approachable by customers and by the public."

Opel Motorsport has not yet responded to an enquiry from e-Formula.news on the subject.

In addition to Maserati, Stellantis has been competing in Formula E with the DS Automobiles brand for ten years now. DS has not yet been confirmed for the Gen4 era, but is still in the running. Nevertheless, a change within the Group could also take place. Another new candidate from Stellantis is Citroen.

1st own Stellantis team in the Gen4 era?

Until now, Stellantis has always worked with private teams in its Formula E history: first with Virgin, then with Techeetah and today with MSG and Penske. According to the aforementioned report, however, it is "unlikely" that the latter partnership will continue in the Gen4 era. Team principal Jay Penske is said to have spoken to Porsche about a customer team contract, but is also considering a manufacturer status of his own, as the team already had in the past.

Stellantis is therefore also evaluating the option of setting up its own team for the first time, especially as the future of the ailing second current partner team - MSG Racing - is uncertain. "Yes, it could be and we have time before Gen4, so we are scanning different scenarios," confirms Finot.

"The way we are working with partners, it's efficient from the financial side, of course. As we are used to that, it works well. We could keep on like that, we could adapt. For the time being, it's still open", say Finot. Should Stellantis actually build an additional team, Formula E could have twelve teams on the grid again in the Gen4 era for the first time since Season 6.
