New Formula E cockpit candidate: IndyCar driver Sting Ray Robb tests Lola Gen4

Lola Yamaha is looking for two new Formula E drivers for the Gen4 era. Alongside established candidates such as Dan Ticktum, IndyCar driver Sting Ray Robb has now also tested the British manufacturer's Gen4 development car in Spain. A move to Formula E is possible, although Robb's priority remains a programme in IndyCar.

Robb has competed in the IndyCar Series since 2023 but has so far been unable to establish himself near the front of the field. Across four seasons, he has raced for Dale Coyne Racing, A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Juncos Hollinger Racing. He finished the 2026 season 25th in the standings and last among the full-time drivers.

Robb's financial background is another interesting aspect. The American has been regarded as a well-backed driver during his time in IndyCar. According to media reports, Robb could also bring funding with him in the event of a move to Formula E.

An IndyCar programme is still said to be the American's priority. According to our colleagues at FE Notebook, however, a Formula E move for the 2026/27 season has not been ruled out. Should Robb secure a full-time seat, he would become only the fifth American driver in Formula E history. Matthew Brabham, Scott Speed, Marco Andretti and, most recently, Oliver Askew have previously competed in the electric racing series.

Lola looking for 2 new Formula E drivers

Following Lucas di Grassi's retirement and Zane Maloney's surprise departure, Lola needs to find an entirely new driver pairing for the upcoming season. In addition to Robb, who tested the Gen4 development car in southern Spain this week, Lola has also been linked with Robert Shwartzman and Victor Martins.

It remains unclear whether talks with either driver are still ongoing. Shwartzman recently signed with Stellantis and will race for Peugeot in the WEC from 2027. Martins, meanwhile, had initially been linked with the vacant Nissan Formula E seat, which ultimately went to Zane Maloney.

Dan Ticktum has already completed a Gen4 test with Lola. The Briton is also looking for a new team following the end of his spell with Cupra Kiro and is considered a strong candidate for a seat. Organisationally, the team is also undergoing major changes following the end of its partnership with ABT and its move to Silverstone. Lola's Gen4 package is fast, but reliability remains a concern

Ticktum's test took place in Guadix at the end of August. He completed two days of running with the Lola Yamaha Gen4 powertrain. According to FE Notebook, the test was generally positive. It was not entirely trouble-free, however, with the reliability of Lola's package said to remain a concern.

At the beginning of September, Lola also completed a test programme on AVL's dynamometer in Graz, Austria. Around the same time, the team moved its operations to Silverstone. It is not yet known exactly when Robb drove the Gen4 Lola in Spain or how many kilometres he completed. Whether the test has actually improved his chances of securing one of Lola's two seats also remains unclear.
