E Racing: Electric Motorsport
Besides Formula E, there are now several other fully-electric racing series. These include newly created categories such as MotoE, but also well-known series such as the Rallycross World Championship (WRX), which has been running its races electrically since 2022. In our E Racing section, we report on all these championships.
FIA Rallycross World Championship
The FIA World Rallycross Championship - also known as WRX or World RX - started going electric in 2022. Rallycross combines rallye, i.e. off-road motorsport, with circuit racing. Short races with few cars are held on tracks with different surfaces, such as asphalt, sand, or gravel. The World RX is the top category in global rallycross and was created in 2014 from the European Rallycross Championship, which was awarded world championship status.
RX2e Championship
The FIA RX2e Championship was the first rallycross series that exclusively ran its events with battery-electric vehicles. In 2021, it completed its first season as a pioneer on the support bill of the Rallycross World Championship WRX, which also became electric in 2022.
Formula G
From the end of 2024, Formula G (formerly the ACE Championship) will supplement various championships as a pure support series and will start with two different performance classes for professionals and newcomers.
MotoE
The "FIM Enel MotoE World Cup" is an electric motorcycle racing series in the support program of MotoGP. The first MotoE season took place in 2019. Spec-motorcycles are used in short World Cup sprint races.
ETCR
The FIA ETCR was the first fully electric touring car series. Already in its debut season in 2021 (then known as "Pure ETCR"), two full-fledged manufacturers Cupra and Hyundai competed. In addition, the Romeo Ferraris team entered an electrified Alfa Romeo Giulia. In 2022, the series has been part of the international automotive umbrella organization FIA as the "FIA eTouring Car World Cup". Before the start of season 2023, the promoter - Discovery Events - decided discontinue the ETCR product.
Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy
The Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy was the first full-electric brand cup in the support program of Formula E. In the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons, modified versions of the Jaguar I-Pace with up to 325 kW of power competed for the championship in most E-Prix races.
E1 Series
The UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series is the first racing series for electric motorboats. The E1 Series, initiated by Alejandro Agag, aims to pit hydrofoil boats against each other from 2023 onwards to draw attention to the effects of climate change on rivers, lakes, and oceans.
ERA (Electric Racing Academy)
The "Electric Racing Academy" is a junior series for electric formula vehicles. In the summer of 2022, ERA held its first event with same-spec cars on Formula 4 level. The series aims to introduce young talents to electric racing championships.
Roborace
Roborace was a motorsport category set up for autonomous racing cars. In the summer of 2019, Roborace started its "Alpha Season," in which human drivers initially competed against AI vehicles to train the algorithm. One day, machines were supposed to compete against each other. However, shortly after the "Beta Season" in 2022, the project failed.
